Dr. Aigbs Ohiwerei, one of our Directors at Just Ears Clinic, recently achieved an awe-inspiring milestone: completing two marathons in Nigeria within a mere six days! Let’s delve into this remarkable journey:
The Marathons: On February 4th, Dr Ohiwerei laced up his running shoes for the Ile-Ife Heritage Marathon. The ancient city of Ile-Ife, known as the cradle of the Yoruba people, provided a historic backdrop for this challenging race. The city, nestled in southwestern Nigeria, boasts a rich heritage. It is believed to be the birthplace of Yoruba civilization, where myth and history intertwine, and where Oduduwa, the progenitor of the Yoruba people, descended from the heavens to establish his kingdom.
Just six days later, on February 10th, he tackled the Access Lagos City Marathon. “I have ran a few marathons in my time but the Lagos City Marathon takes the crown for the Beast of All Marathons. The humidity and the sweltering heat 35 degrees of the metropolis on the day was a killer. Crossing Third Mainland Bridge which was 11 kilometres long, during the early stages of the race was a mental battle, it just kept going” he said.
Running in the Country of his Birth: For Dr. Ohiwerei, these marathons held special significance. Born in Nigeria, he has traversed the globe, conquering marathons in New York, Berlin, Boston and Tokyo. Yet, running on the soil of his birth stirred emotions beyond measure. Nigeria—the land that shaped him, the culture, the rhythm of its streets. “Each step retraced the footprints of my childhood, igniting beautiful memories and nostalgia”, he said.
Marathon Challenges and Life Lessons: Dr Ohiwerei, feels that Marathon running mirrors life’s challenges. “The gruelling miles, the mental fortitude, the relentless pursuit to complete the races—all resonate with our personal struggles”. Dr. Ohiwerei applies the lessons of his marathon running to everyday life challenges. “The obstacle is the way”, Perseverance, discipline, and resilience, these are all key”…he said
