Balance Screening
If you are experiencing dizziness, vertigo, or unsteadiness in daily life, our Balance Assessment is perfect for checking and treating your balance function.
At Just Ears, we understand the frustration of experiencing dizziness, vertigo or unsteadiness and balance issues in day‑to‑day life. That is why we offer our specialist balance screening and assessment from our Port Solent and Bursledon Clinics.

Your sense of balance relies on three main systems working together: the inner ear, the eyes, and tiny sensors in your muscles and joints. The inner ear detects motion and head position, the eyes provide visual information about your surroundings, and your body sends signals about posture and movement to the brain. Your brain brings all this information together to keep you steady and help you move confidently. When one part of this system is not working properly, it can lead to dizziness, imbalance or vertigo.
Our balance screening appointment is 40 minutes and costs £149. During this appointment, a Clinical Scientist in Audiology will begin by taking a brief history of your symptoms and medical background, then perform a focused set of balance function tests to give an overview of how well your balance system is working.
You may benefit from a balance screening or assessment if you:
Even mild balance problems can affect safety, independence and quality of life, so early assessment can provide clarity and reassurance.
If your screening suggests that more detailed investigation is needed, we can discuss options for extended balance testing. These longer assessments may last between one and three hours and can be split into shorter sessions if that suits you better. A full assessment can include extended videonystagmography (VNG), additional positioning tests and repeat manoeuvres, giving a comprehensive picture of your balance function and helping refine ongoing treatment plans.
Our balance service is delivered by Clinical Scientists in Audiology, Rory Smith and Michael East, highly trained healthcare professionals specialising in hearing and balance assessment and rehabilitation. They combine a strong scientific background with a patient‑centred approach, using advanced equipment to investigate your symptoms and communicating results in clear, understandable language.

Some tests may briefly bring on dizziness, and a few can feel stronger than what you’d usually experience. Everything will be explained fully beforehand, and we’ll do all we can to make it a comfortable experience while guiding you safely through each step.
No — you can book directly, or be referred by your GP or ENT. With your consent, we can securely share your report with other professionals, just bring their contact details if you’d like us to do so.
Most appointments last between one and three hours, depending on the tests needed. We’ll let you know the plan in advance so you can feel prepared and at ease. We can also split the assessment into smaller sessions if that better fits your schedule, just let us know.
Please bring a list of your current medications, any glasses or hearing aids you normally use, and feel free to have a friend or family member join you for support. If there’s anything else that helps you feel at ease, you’re welcome to bring that too.
Yes — all of our tests are non-invasive and clinically safe. Any small risks will be explained to you fully beforehand so you know exactly what to expect. We’ll check in with you regularly and adjust as needed to make sure you remain comfortable throughout.
We’ll talk you through our findings at the end of your appointment, giving you time to ask questions. You’ll also receive a clear written summary, which can be shared with your GP or specialist if you wish.
We understand that things don’t always go to plan. If you need to cancel you appointment, if 48 hours’ notice is provided, we are happy to refund full clinic fee. Unfortunately if less notice is given a refund is not possible because of the difficulty in filling clinic slots at short notice.
