How we can help

At Just Ears, we understand the frustration of experiencing dizziness, vertigo or unsteadiness and balance issues in day‑to‑day life. That is why we offer our specialist balance screening and assessment from our Port Solent and Bursledon Clinics.

How your balance system works

Dizziness

Your sense of balance relies on three main systems working together: the inner ear, the eyes, and tiny sensors in your muscles and joints. The inner ear detects motion and head position, the eyes provide visual information about your surroundings, and your body sends signals about posture and movement to the brain. Your brain brings all this information together to keep you steady and help you move confidently. When one part of this system is not working properly, it can lead to dizziness, imbalance or vertigo.

What we offer at Just Ears

  • Specialist assessment of your ear and balance system using advanced, non‑invasive tests.
  • Clinician‑led care from Clinical Scientists in Audiology with expertise in hearing and balance disorders.
  • Clear explanations at every step, with personalised recommendations tailored to your symptoms and lifestyle.
  • Written reports that can be shared with your GP or specialist, with your consent.

Our balance screening appointment is 40 minutes and costs £149. During this appointment, a Clinical Scientist in Audiology will begin by taking a brief history of your symptoms and medical background, then perform a focused set of balance function tests to give an overview of how well your balance system is working.

Who Can Benefit?

You may benefit from a balance screening or assessment if you:

  • Experience dizziness, vertigo, light‑headedness or a sense of spinning.
  • Feel unsteady on your feet, especially when walking in the dark or on uneven ground.
  • Notice that certain head positions or movements make your symptoms worse.
  • Have had recent falls or near‑falls and are worried about your balance.
  • Simply want a thorough check of your balance system for peace of mind.

Even mild balance problems can affect safety, independence and quality of life, so early assessment can provide clarity and reassurance.

Your 40‑minute Balance Screening (£149)

1. Take a brief medical history. Our team will ask about your symptoms, when they started, how often they occur, and which movements or situations make them better or worse. This context helps guide which tests are most appropriate
2. Check your ears (otoscopic examination). A small hand‑held camera or lens is used to look at your ear canals and eardrums, checking for wax or other ear problems that could contribute to balance symptoms.
3. Assess middle ear function (tympanometry). A quick, gentle test using small changes in air pressure checks how well your eardrum and middle ear are moving, helping to spot issues like fluid, stiffness or blockages that may affect hearing and balance.
4. Assess balance organ function (horizontal vHIT). Using special goggles, the clinician will perform small, quick head movements while you focus on a target, measuring how well the balance organs in each inner ear are working. You will be asked to relax your neck while your head is moved for you, and the goggles only need to be worn for a few minutes.
5. Screen eye movements and coordination (screening VNG and simple checks). Eye movements are recorded with goggle‑mounted cameras while you follow simple visual targets, showing how your eyes, inner ears and brain work together to maintain balance. Simple coordination or gait checks may also be carried out to see how your balance responds when you move.
6. Positioning tests (if indicated). If your symptoms suggest a condition such as benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), specific head and body positions may be used while your eye movements are observed with special goggles. These tests are safe but do require a reasonable level of mobility, for example moving from sitting to lying back.
7. On‑the‑spot treatment for BPPV (if appropriate). If BPPV is identified, canalith repositioning manoeuvres can often be offered during the same appointment, using specific movements to guide displaced particles in the inner ear back to where they should be. Many patients experience significant relief after just one treatment session.
8. Debrief, diagnosis and next steps. At the end of the appointment, your clinician will clearly explain the findings, discuss possible causes of your symptoms, and outline recommended next steps or treatment options if needed. You will receive a written summary, and with your consent a copy can be sent securely to your GP or specialist

Full balance assessment (beyond screening)

If your screening suggests that more detailed investigation is needed, we can discuss options for extended balance testing. These longer assessments may last between one and three hours and can be split into shorter sessions if that suits you better. A full assessment can include extended videonystagmography (VNG), additional positioning tests and repeat manoeuvres, giving a comprehensive picture of your balance function and helping refine ongoing treatment plans.
