Welcome to the Just Ears Clinic blog series on the various types of hearing loss. In this second part, we will focus on ear infections and their impact on hearing health.

Ear Infections

Another common culprit behind decreased hearing is ear infections. These infections can occur when bacteria or viruses invade the middle ear, causing inflammation and fluid buildup that interferes with sound transmission. Symptoms may include ear pain, a sensation of pressure, and, naturally diminished hearing.

Home Treatment for Ear Infections: To help alleviate any pain and discomfort associated with an ear infection, you may consider the following remedies:

Do’s

  • Use painkillers such as paracetamol or ibuprofen (note that aspirin should not be given to children under 16).
  • Apply a warm or cold flannel gently to the affected ear to relieve pain. Carefully wipe away any discharge with cotton wool, avoiding any attempts to insert objects into the ear.

Don’ts

  • Refrain from inserting objects into your ear, such as cotton buds or fingers.
  • Keep water or shampoo out of the ear.
  • Avoid decongestants or antihistamines, as there is insufficient evidence to support their effectiveness for ear infections.

When to Seek Professional Help

If you notice any significant changes in your hearing—especially if accompanied by pain, discharge, or other concerning symptoms—it is paramount to consult a medical professional. You can start by visiting your general practitioner (GP), who can assess your condition and refer you to an otolaryngologist (ear, nose, and throat doctor) or a hearing specialist can provide a thorough diagnosis and tailored treatment options based on your particular circumstances.
